Taking the onSET

You will need a valid form of photo ID (passport, identity card or driving licence). You must present this ID during the identity check at the start of the language placement test.

Any deviation from the correct spelling of a word is counted as an error. However, you have sufficient time to correct typing errors. Please note that you cannot go back to texts you have already completed.

Yes. All standard variants are accepted. Please ensure that you use the correct spelling in each case.

Both the old and the new spelling rules apply. For example, ‘ß’ may also be spelled as ‘ss’ in permissible cases (such as in ‘Fluss’, but not in ‘Floss’). If your keyboard does not include the ‘ß’ character, a selection bar appears below each cloze text in the onSET German test; this can be operated by mouse click.

Substitutions of the German Umlauts such as  ‘ae’, ‘oe’ or ‘ue’ are not accepted. If your keyboard does not include the relevant characters, a selection bar on your screen below the fill-in-the-blank texts in onSET German will help. Click on the character you need. It will be inserted at the desired position.

All gaps must be filled in or completed unambiguously and linguistically correct.  It is counted as an error if you write two or more words in a single gap (e.g. two words separated by a slash or a space).

No. No aids are permitted during the test.
